It replaced the pound with an exchange rate of 1 gourde = 8 pounds 5 pennies. In 1870 and 1872, the gourde was revalued, the first time from 10 to 1, and the second time from 300 to 1. At the time, there were only paper. The word piastre was sometimes used, especially on a note of 1875. In 1881, the exange rate was indexed to the French franc at 5 francs = 1 gourde. The convertibility of the franc was suspended in 1912 and the gourde was indexed to the US dollar at the rate of 5 gourdes per dollar.
