iciHaiti - Social : Earthquake of 1842 Haiti remembers 11/05/2015 12:43:00 Recall that before January 12, 2010, the last great earthquake that hit the country dated back to the nineteenth century. It was May 7, 1842, with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale an earthquake hit the north of the island. Half of the 10,000 residents of Cap-Haitien died and 300 others disappeared in a tsunami that followed the quake, on the north coast of the island. According to experts, the northern fault who would be at the origin of this earthquake, stores energy for 171 years and its release could give rise to earthquakes of magnitude greater than 7 on the Richter scale.
