iciHaiti - DR : The question of illegal Haitian minors in the streets of Santiago
The Head of Post of the Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago, Jean Gardy Marius and his team once again met Luisa Ovando and Alexandra Santelises, respectively President and Executive Director of the Dominican National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI),

The issue of Haitian minors, without any identification document, occupying the streets is the main concern of the two institutions. Each of these institutions has an important role to play in trying to eradicate this phenomenon, through a program based on protection at all levels.

The two institutions managed to agree on various points which will serve as the basis for an action plan which will extend over several phases.

CONANI will implement in Santiago de Los Caballeros the Host Family Placement Program which is already underway in Santo Domingo. In its support actions, the Consulate will provide the Program with an interpreter to facilitate communication. The Federation of Pastors will have to ensure follow-up in procedures going beyond the limits of the Consulate and CONANI.

CONANI officials were satisfied with this meeting with the Consulate team, they took advantage of showing the importance of a working session with the Embassy of Haiti in the Dominican Republic, the local police, the general directorate of Migration as well as the Federation of Pastors.

The Consulate of Haiti in Santiago and CONANI are working together to find an effective mechanism capable of changing the situation of Haitian children on the streets of Santiago.
